A Weekend in Asheville
Asheville, NC
Asheville packs more into a weekend than any other mountain town in the Southeast — an 8,000-acre Vanderbilt estate, a working artists' district along the French Broad, dozens of independent breweries, and the Blue Ridge Parkway running right through it. Two nights barely covers it; three is better.
Biltmore Estate
Plan a full day: house tour, gardens, conservatory, and the winery on the far end. Christmas at Biltmore and Candlelight Evenings are bucket-list trips.
River Arts District
100+ working studios in repurposed warehouses along the French Broad. Saturdays are the most open-studio-heavy.
Breweries
Wedge, Burial, Hi-Wire, Green Man, Highland — the South Slope and River Arts walks let you cover several without driving.
Mountain Dance & Folk Festival
The country's longest-running folk festival — early August at the Diana Wortham Theatre. Old-time and bluegrass under stage lights.
A 2-day plan
- Day 1 — Biltmore. Arrive at the gates by 9, do the house first, gardens after lunch, winery in the late afternoon.
- Evening — South Slope. Walk the brewery row, then dinner downtown.
- Day 2 — River Arts + Parkway. Studios in the morning, then drive the Parkway south to Mt. Pisgah for the overlook.
Places to Stay Near Asheville
For first visits, stay walkable to downtown or the River Arts District. For a quieter weekend, look at cabins in Black Mountain (15 minutes east) or up toward Weaverville. If you're anchoring around Biltmore, the south end of town shaves morning driving.
