Tail of the Dragon — US 129, Deals Gap
Deals Gap, TN/NC line
The Tail of the Dragon is 318 curves in 11 miles along US-129 between Deals Gap, TN and the North Carolina line. It's the most famous stretch of asphalt in the eastern US — a pilgrimage road for motorcyclists and sports-car drivers, sandwiched between the Cherokee National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains.
What it is
11 miles of unbroken curves on US-129. No driveways, no intersections, no commercial trucks.
Best direction
Most drivers run it both ways. South-to-north (TN → NC) tends to be slightly less congested in the morning.
Know before you go
55 mph posted limit and strict enforcement. Photographers stationed mid-road sell action shots after.
Pair it with
The Cherohala Skyway (TN-165) and the Foothills Parkway — both within 30 minutes — make a full loop day.
When to go
Weekday mornings in spring and fall are ideal — cooler air, dry pavement, and a fraction of the weekend traffic. Avoid wet days; the Dragon is unforgiving when the road slicks up. Peak bike season runs April through October.
Places to Stay Near Tail of the Dragon
Robbinsville, NC is the closest real basecamp — quiet, with cabins and lodges sized for groups. Deals Gap itself has the Crossroads of Time resort right at the southern end of the road. Townsend, TN works if you want to combine the Dragon with Cades Cove the next morning.
