GA

Alpine village on the Chattahoochee.

Helen, Georgia sits in a tight bend of the Chattahoochee River in White County, and is the third-most-visited city in Georgia thanks to a 1969 downtown reinvention that turned a fading logging town into a re-created Alpine Bavarian village. Every building in the two-block downtown carries a mandated South German façade, cobblestone crosswalks, and umbrella-shaded biergartens, giving Helen its distinctive look and its year-round festival calendar.

The town is best known for Oktoberfest — the longest-running Oktoberfest in the country, held at the riverside Festhalle from mid-September through late October — and for Chattahoochee River tubing in summer, where outfitters like Cool River Tubing and Helen Tubing float travelers past downtown in an easy 1–2 hour drift. Just north of town, Unicoi State Park, Anna Ruby Falls, and Smithgall Woods add hiking, waterfalls, and trout streams, while Yonah Mountain and the wineries of Cleveland and Sautee Nacoochee are a short drive south.

Helen fills up on fall foliage weekends, holiday market weekends, and Hot Air Balloon Race weekend in early June, so travelers looking for cabin rentals nearby often base themselves in Sautee Nacoochee, Cleveland, Clarkesville, or along the Unicoi Turnpike toward Hiawassee for quicker access and quieter evenings.
