The peaceful side of the Smokies near Cades Cove.

Townsend, Tennessee bills itself as "the Peaceful Side of the Smokies," and it earns the name — while Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge sit on the north side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Townsend is on the quieter western edge, closest to Cades Cove. The 11-mile Cades Cove Loop Road — a one-way drive through a preserved 19th-century Appalachian valley with churches, cabins, working grist mills, and reliable black bear and white-tailed deer sightings — is the most-visited destination inside the entire national park, and Townsend is the closest base.

The town sits along the Little River, whose swimming holes, tubing runs, and roadside pull-offs are legendary. Just downstream, the Little River Gorge Road (Highway 73) into the park is one of the prettiest drives in the Smokies. Cades Cove connects to backcountry destinations like Abrams Falls, Rocky Top / Thunderhead Mountain, and the Gregory Bald flame azalea display in June.

Townsend anchors an annual Fall Heritage Festival, has a walkable string of Little River outfitters, cabin rentals, and small restaurants, and offers the Tuckaleechee Caverns limestone cave system just outside town — one of the most-visited caves in Tennessee.
