Banner Elk, North Carolina sits at 3,701 feet in the Avery County high country between Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain — the two largest ski resorts in the Southeast. Founded by the Banner family in the 1850s and named for the elk that once roamed the valley (long since hunted out and, unlike in Cataloochee, never reintroduced), the town wraps around Lees-McRae College and holds one of the region's more distinctive small downtowns.
Winter is Banner Elk's headline season, with Sugar Mountain (the largest ski area in North Carolina) and Beech Mountain (the highest ski area in the East at 5,506 feet) both within 10 minutes. Summer draws visitors up to the same peaks for hiking, mountain biking, and the Beech Mountain Resort's summer disc golf and downhill lift-served biking. The Banner Elk Winery, Grandfather Vineyard, and the drive up to Grandfather Mountain and the Rough Ridge overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway round out the year.
Banner Elk hosts the Woolly Worm Festival every October — a two-day fall festival built around a live woolly worm race that predicts the coming winter — and it pairs naturally with Boone, Blowing Rock, and the Linville / Grandfather Mountain corridor.
