GA

Habersham County seat in the Soque River valley — fly fishing, Mark of the Potter, and easy access to the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway.

Clarkesville, Georgia is the seat of Habersham County and one of the state's oldest mountain resort towns, established in 1823 as a summer retreat for lowland Georgians escaping coastal heat and malaria. Its historic downtown square is anchored by the Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church (1842), the oldest church building in North Georgia in continuous use, and by a compact main street of shops and restaurants including the acclaimed Copper Pot.

Clarkesville sits in the Soque River valley — a private, spring-fed trophy trout stream that runs through Brigadoon Lodge, Blackhawk Fly Fishing, and Nacoochee Bend, and it's the closest town to Mark of the Potter, a 1930s grist mill on the Soque that has been a working pottery studio for more than 50 years. Just to the east, Tallulah Falls, Tallulah Gorge State Park, and the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway are all short drives, and Lake Burton and Moccasin Creek State Park lie just to the north.

The town is a quieter, more residential alternative to Helen and Clayton — a natural pick for fly fishermen, artists, and travelers who want an easy base near Tallulah Gorge without festival-weekend crowds.
