Riverside craft village on the Tuckasegee — pottery studios, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad depot, and easy raft put-ins.
Dillsboro, North Carolina is a Tuckasegee River craft village of about 250 residents that sits directly downstream from Sylva along U.S. 74 in Jackson County. Founded in 1889 as the Western North Carolina Railroad crossed the river, the town's centerpiece is the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad depot, from which excursion trains still run to Bryson City and up the Nantahala Gorge.
Dillsboro's small commercial district is dense with working craft studios — Riverwood Shops, Dogwood Crafters (a 1976 artisan cooperative), and Oaks Gallery — plus small restaurants and inns like the Jarrett House, one of the oldest continuously operating inns in North Carolina. The Tuckasegee River runs along the entire southern edge of town, with outfitters running Class I–II rafting and tubing trips daily in season.
Dillsboro is a natural add-on to Sylva, Cherokee, and the Blue Ridge Parkway climb over Balsam Gap, and it's one of the more distinctive small-town stops in WNC for travelers looking for pottery, glass, and river time in the same afternoon.
