Catawba River gateway at the foot of the Black Mountains — Point Lookout overlook, Catawba Falls, and a growing trail system.
Old Fort, North Carolina is a McDowell County town at the base of the Black Mountains where the Blue Ridge escarpment rises abruptly from the Catawba River valley. Historically the last white frontier fort before the Cherokee lands beyond the Blue Ridge, Old Fort is best known today for the Andrews Geyser (a hand-built 1885 fountain fed by gravity from a mountain lake, still shooting 80 feet in the air), Point Lookout — a 3.6-mile paved rail-trail with a signature Blue Ridge overlook — and the growing Kitsuma / Heartbreak Ridge mountain-bike trail system on Old Fort Mountain.
The town is the gateway to Catawba Falls — a 100-foot cascade whose recent National Forest Service improvements added a stair-and-viewing platform to the upper falls — and to the Mountain Gateway Museum, which interprets Appalachian frontier life. Downtown Old Fort has been undergoing a small-scale revival with breweries, coffee roasters, and outdoor outfitters clustered around the historic railroad depot.
Old Fort is a quiet, close-in alternative to Black Mountain and Asheville for travelers who want mountain-bike or waterfall access without staying in a full tourist town.
