Jackson County seat with a postcard courthouse, Tuckasegee River fly fishing, and one of WNC's best small-town Main Streets.
Sylva, North Carolina is the seat of Jackson County and the postcard image of a small Blue Ridge courthouse town — the 1914 Jackson County Courthouse rises at the top of a broad stone stair above Main Street, and the view down the street with the mountains behind is one of the most-photographed in Western North Carolina. The old courthouse now houses the Jackson County Public Library and Community Room.
Downtown Sylva packs a nationally recognized independent bookstore (City Lights Bookstore), Innovation Brewing, the Sylva Herald building, and a growing restaurant scene into three walkable blocks. The Tuckasegee River runs along the north side of town with easy fly-fishing access at Delayed Harvest waters, and the town is a short drive from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee.
Sylva pairs naturally with Dillsboro just downstream (the two towns effectively share a downtown along U.S. 74), and it's an easy base for Cataloochee, the Blue Ridge Parkway at Balsam Gap, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad from Bryson City, and Panthertown Valley near Cashiers.
