Helton Creek Falls is a pair of waterfalls in the Chattahoochee National Forest just south of Vogel State Park, between Blairsville and Neels Gap in north Georgia. A short trail of roughly 0.3 miles one-way (about 0.6 miles round trip) drops through rhododendron and hemlock to two viewing areas: the lower falls, a roughly 30-foot slide into a clear pool, and the taller upper falls just beyond, sliding down a broad granite face. It's one of the easiest two-waterfall hikes in the Blairsville area.
Spring brings the strongest water flow and blooming rhododendron in late May and June; mid-to-late October frames both falls in color. Because the trail is short, with stairs and boardwalk sections, it works well for families and a quick stop on a Vogel or Blood Mountain day. Overcast mornings give photographers the softest light on the upper falls. The rocks around both falls are extremely slippery — stay on the platforms and marked trail, and never climb on the wet rock face.
Vogel State Park, with its lake, beach and Bear Hair Gap trail, is only a few minutes north on US-129. Neels Gap and the Walasi-Yi Center on the Appalachian Trail are a short drive south, and Blood Mountain is the classic hike from there. Downtown Blairsville, Lake Nottely and Brasstown Bald are about twenty to thirty minutes away, so Helton Creek fits easily into a full mountain day.
