Home to Brasstown Bald and Vogel State Park.
Blairsville, Georgia is the seat of Union County and sits at the base of Blood Mountain in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Founded in 1835 on land taken in the Cherokee removal, its historic downtown square is anchored by the 1899 Union County Courthouse and the Union County Historical Society museum. The town is home to the Sorghum Festival every October — a two-weekend celebration of cane-syrup-making that has been running since 1969.
Blairsville is the closest full-service town to Vogel State Park, one of Georgia's oldest and most beloved state parks. Vogel's 22-acre Lake Trahlyta, Trahlyta Falls, Coosa Backcountry Trail, and CCC-built stone cabins draw visitors year round, and the park is a top fall-foliage destination. Just up the road, Neel Gap on U.S. 129 crosses the Appalachian Trail at Mountain Crossings — the only spot where the AT passes through a building — with Blood Mountain summit a 2.2-mile hike away.
Other nearby draws include Brasstown Bald, Helton Creek Falls, Lake Nottely, the Richard Russell Scenic Highway loop over Hogpen Gap, and the wineries of Young Harris and Hiawassee. Blairsville is a strong pick for travelers who want cabin quiet, easy state-park access, and a real small-town square without the traffic of Helen or Blue Ridge.
